Ireland’s home grants assistance service
Explore support for improving your home in Donegal. Explore the 3D home, compare upgrades and see grant estimates before choosing your next step.
Explore this guideThe SEAI schemes are national, so the amounts below apply in Co. Donegal exactly as they do everywhere else. Explore the cost guidance for the county’s most common home type, then check the register for the work you need.
Grants cover part of the cost. For individual grants you pay the registered contractor in full, and SEAI pays the grant back after the work and the paperwork; some homes are inspected. The figures below are for a typical detached house, the commonest type in the county. The costs are SEAI’s median costs for grant-aided work completed in January–June 2026, the same figures as the grant plan. They are not quotes, and they assume the grant shown applies: your grant may be lower and your quote will differ.

| Upgrade | Grant | Typical cost (SEAI median) | You’d pay about |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attic insulation | Up to €2,000 | €2,700 | €700 |
| Cavity wall insulation | Up to €1,800 | €2,350 | €550 |
| Windows | Up to €4,000 | €10,453 | €6,450 |
| External doors (up to 2) | Up to €1,600 | €4,300 | €2,700 |
| Heat pump system | Up to €14,500 | €17,000 | €2,500 |
| Solar PV | Up to €1,800 | €11,100 | €9,300 |
Why the balance matters. A grant does not necessarily cover the full price of the work. Your remaining cost depends on the written quote and the grant approved for your project; no upgrade should be assumed to be nearly free. Knowing what you will pay before you ring anyone saves everybody's time.
The heat pump balance assumes the whole €14,500: up to €10,500 for the heat pump system, up to €2,000 for new radiators or underfloor heating, and the €2,000 boiler scrappage grant for removing oil, gas, solid fuel or storage heating. Without all three you pay more.
Grant-supported work requires registration for the specific measure. These source-specific snapshots show published service areas, which can cover several counties. They do not establish where a business is based or whether it is taking new work.

SEAI does not approve, guarantee or warrant any contractor, and neither do we. Compare written quotes and confirm current registration for the exact wall method, windows or doors, heat-pump technology or other work you need.
Most insulation and window grants need a home built and occupied before 2011; the heat pump grant before 2021, and the solar grants before 2025. Ownership matters too — the grant is claimed by the owner.
Get more than one. Prices for the same job vary widely, and only a contractor who has surveyed the property can give you a real figure.
For planned work, apply and accept your SEAI grant offer before ordering materials or starting. SEAI publishes a provision for some windows or doors ordered or started on or after 27 January 2026, subject to its scheme requirements and a registered contractor. If you have already ordered or started, confirm your case with SEAI and your registered contractor before relying on grant support. Read the windows and doors timing guidance.
You pay the registered contractor in full. Send SEAI the completion paperwork, including the post-works BER where required, and SEAI pays the grant back, usually 4 to 6 weeks later. Some homes are inspected. A One Stop Shop, and many solar companies, take the grant off the price up front. For planned work, arrange grant approval before starting; confirm any already-started windows or doors case with SEAI.

The same national SEAI schemes apply everywhere in the Republic: attic and wall insulation, windows and external doors, heat pumps, solar PV and heating controls. The Warmer Homes Scheme may fully fund suitable upgrades for homeowners who own and live in their main residence, built and occupied before 2006, and receive a qualifying welfare payment. An SEAI survey decides which works, if any, are suitable. The housing stock varies by county. Check the conditions for your home and the contractor’s current registration for the work; a register listing does not confirm availability.
Warmer Homes eligibility checked : SEAI’s eligibility rules. Read our Warmer Homes guide for the full conditions.
At SEAI’s median costs for a typical detached house, attic insulation leaves about €700 to pay after the €2,000 grant, and a heat pump about €2,500 after €14,500 of grants, if all of the heat pump grant applies. Your own figure depends on the written quote and the grant SEAI approves. You pay the registered contractor in full, and SEAI pays the grant back after the work, usually 4 to 6 weeks after the paperwork is in. A One Stop Shop, and many solar companies, take the grant off the price up front.
Use the official register for the work: Better Energy Homes for insulation, windows, doors and heat pumps, domestic Solar PV companies for solar panels, or One Stop Shops for a whole-home upgrade. Our county directory separates these routes and shows snapshot dates. Check the exact measure and service area on the current register, then ask the business whether it can take your job. You can also use our grant plan and ask for a quote.
Most SEAI insulation and window grants require a home built and occupied before 2011; the heat pump grant one built and occupied before 2021, and since 6 October 2026 the solar grants one built and occupied before 2025. Co. Donegal has around 42,033 dwellings on the BER register, but a count of BER records does not establish a home's age or grant eligibility. Use the grant plan on HomeGrants.ie to see which grants fit your own home. SEAI confirms eligibility for each application.
